NOISE AND VIBRATION STUDY CAMERON HIHGLAND

The purpose of this study are to measure the noise level using available noise equipment, to determine the noise level at selected location (Cameron Highland), and to conclude the noise exposure based on guidelines. This study was conducted at Sekolah Kebangsaan Brinchang, Cameron Highlands on (23/11/2022).

My friends and I was measuring the volume of noise using the available equipment.

Noise pollution can cause health problems for humans and wildlife on land and in the sea. Noise pollution affects millions of people every day. The most common health problem it causes is noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL). Exposure to loud noise can also lead to high blood pressure, heart disease, sleep disturbances and stress. These health problems can affect all age groups, especially children. Many children who live near noisy airports or streets have been found to suffer from stress and other problems such as impaired memory, concentration levels and reading skills. To ensure that the noise level does not negatively impact the public, the existing noise level should not exceed too much from the permissible limit for a long period of time. This is because high noise levels can disturb the area’s peace and for the study area, which is SK Brinchang, it can impact the school communities. For example, the student will have difficulty focusing on during their lesson, and the teachers will also face difficulty conducting their lesson. But this will affect their learning process. In the worst-case scenario, a very high and prolonged noise level can lead to hearing loss to any individual who is exposed to this noise level.

Overall, it can be concluded that the noise level occurring at SK Brinchang is above the Permissible Sound Level (LAeq). Among the biggest factors that cause noise in the area is noise from vehicles such as heavy vehicles such as trailer trucks, cars that use modified exhausts and so on. Based on a 10-hour observation, the types of vehicles contributing to the noise level around the study area are motorcycles, cars, vans, light trucks, single units and combined units. Furthermore, vehicles such as motorcycles and car exhausts have been modified to increase the noise level in Sekolah Kebangsaan Brinchang, Cameron Highlands. In summary, the noise level that occurs around SK Brinchang is not in accordance with the Permissible Sound Level that the Department of Environment has set because the noise level that occurs exceeds 60 dbA based on the second schedule, which is "Permissible Sound Level by Receiving Land Use for Existing Built Up Areas".

To concluded, what I learn from study was, learn on how to used and set up the equipment to measure the noise level. Besides, learn on how to be more careful on setting the equipment, without any mistake and alert with any situation.
